Brodie Rettalick Wins NZ Chess Championship

All Blacks lock Brodie Rettalick made the most of his week off All Black duties by taking out this years New Zealand Chess Championships in Auckland.

Rettalick was invited to take part in the tournament by event organisers as a publicity stunt but quickly stunned the crowds advancing to the final with ease.

Rettalick continued his good form beating NZ #1 Scott Wastney in the final in less than 12 minutes.

NZ Chess President Chris Benson told Thai Castle “I honestly cannot believe this has happened. Chess is a sport for intelligent people not big rugby playing brutes. Brodie struggled to write his name on his application form and kept referring to the knight as a ‘horsey’ and the bishop as a ‘dickhead’. We are appealing this and requiring him to take a drug test.”

When we asked Brodie how he won he looked at us and said “I’ve always been a natural at checkers, this to be honest was just an easier version of it”
