NZ Pole Vaulter Eliza McCartney will be awarded Olympic gold after both Ekateríni Stefanídi and Sandi Morris were disqualified for using illegal poles.
Suspicion started when both Stefanidi and Morris refused to submit the poles they used in competition for a mandatory pole test held after the event.
After nearly a month the poles in question were finally examined and came back testing positive for steroids.
Both Stefanidi and Morris tried to appeal stating that to their knowledge there were no rules against injecting their poles with steroids. The IOC had other ideas saying that both athletes and equipment must be drug free.
McCartney is over the moon as expected and is in talks with the NZ Olympic Committee to have a medal ceremony in Auckland sometime in mid October.
